Saving Mass Effect could require an investment exceeding $200 million.

BioWare confirms that the new Mass Effect game is still in development.

Trent Oster, co-founder of BioWare, revealed that reviving the Mass Effect series will require an initial investment exceeding $200 million, given the public’s expectations for a AAA-quality experience. Despite the substantial sum, Oster believes that developing a good game at a lower cost remains possible through more disciplined management and a team with the necessary expertise.

But the biggest challenge may be convincing EA to relinquish the rights to the series. The company owns the rights to Mass Effect and Dragon Age, and it remains unclear whether it will sell its discontinued titles or retain them. This comes amid reports suggesting that the cancellation of Mass Effect was linked to EA’s desire to direct its resources toward developing Star Wars Battlefront 3, a project perceived as less risky and offering more predictable returns.
